The 1911 Census recorded 284 people named Cranston in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 132 men and 151 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Armagh had the largest share of Cranstons, 22.2% (63 people). Next came Down (52), Antrim (41), Fermanagh (41) and Dublin (27).

The average Cranston in 1911 was 27.2 years old, 27.5 for men and 27.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Cranstons whose literacy was recorded, 74.6% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.1% reading and writing against 71.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Cranston's census form was "Scholar"; 16.9% (48) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.9%), textile worker (8.5%), general labourer (5.6%) and farm labourer (4.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Cranstons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Cranston?
Cranstons were predominantly Anglican (72.2%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (14.1%), Roman Catholic (8.5%), Methodist (3.9%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.1%).
