The 1911 Census recorded 1,012 people named Cremin in Ireland, about 0.023% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 776th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 509 men and 503 women.

The Cremins were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 56.3% of them (570 people). Next came Kerry (226), Limerick (197), Dublin (9) and Tipperary (5).

The average Cremin in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 29.2 for men and 28.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cremin literacy in 1911
Of the Cremins whose literacy was recorded, 75.9% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 20.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.8% reading and writing against 72.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (81), Patrick, Michael, Denis and Daniel. For women it was Mary (100), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Hannah.
Cremin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Cremin's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (208) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.6%), general labourer (4.9%), farm labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Cremins, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Cremin?
Cremins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.1%).
