Men came out slightly ahead, 84.8% reading and writing against 67.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (5.8%), farmer (5.8%), general labourer (5.8%) and railway / tram worker (5.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.6% of all Crippses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

Crippses were predominantly Roman Catholic (78.3%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (11.6%) and Anglican (7.2%).
