The 1911 Census recorded 176 people named Crofton in Ireland; roughly one in every 25,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 97 women to 78 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Croftons, 21% (37 people). Next came Sligo (33), Roscommon (29), Mayo (17) and Laois (15).

The average Crofton in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 31.2 for men and 30.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crofton literacy in 1911
Of the Croftons whose literacy was recorded, 82.8% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.7% reading and writing against 79.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (9), Patrick, James, Thomas and Edward. For women it was Mary (9), followed by Bridget, Katie, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Crofton occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Crofton's census form was "Scholar"; 18.8% (33) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17%), general labourer (4%), domestic servant (2.3%) and teacher (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.9% of all Croftons, followed by general labourers, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Crofton?
Croftons were predominantly Roman Catholic (75%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (25%).
