The 1911 Census recorded 77 people named Cromwell in Ireland; roughly one in every 57,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 35 men and 42 women.

Armagh was Cromwell country: 41.6% of them (32 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (19), Meath (13), Antrim (10) and Dublin (3).

The average Cromwell in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 29.1 for men and 32.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cromwell literacy in 1911
Of the Cromwells whose literacy was recorded, 81.3% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 14.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.3% reading and writing against 78% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (5), William, James, Samuel and John A. For women it was Annie (4), followed by Mary, Anne, Isabella and Lizzie.

The most common occupation among Cromwells was farmer, 18.2% of them (14 people). Next came scholar / student (11.7%), domestic servant (7.8%), farm labourer (3.9%) and textile worker (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.3% of all Cromwells, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and building & construction.
What religion is Cromwell?
Most Cromwells, 53.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24.7%), Anglican (16.9%) and Salvation Army (5.2%).
