The average Cronogue in 1911 was 34.1 years old, 32.3 for men and 36.3 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cronogue literacy in 1911
Of the Cronogues whose literacy was recorded, 75.5% could both read and write, 10.2% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.3% reading and writing against 74.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Cronogue common first names
The most common male names were James (7), John, Thomas, Michael and Patrick; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Anne.
Cronogue occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Cronogues was farmer, 38% of them (19 people). Next came scholar / student (24%), farm labourer (8%), general labourer (4%) and domestic servant (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 46% of all Cronogues, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retired & pensioners.
