The 1911 Census recorded 80 people named Crookes in Ireland; roughly one in every 55,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 46 women to 34 men.

The Crookeses were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 50% of them (40 people). Next came Dublin (16), Meath (8), Down (7) and Armagh (3).

The average Crookes in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 30.3 for men and 28.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crookes literacy in 1911
Of the Crookeses whose literacy was recorded, 84.9% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 11% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.5% reading and writing against 82.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (3), Patrick, Hugh, James and Thomas. For women it was Annie (2), followed by Margaret, Mary, Mary Jane and Bertha.
Crookes occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Crookes's census form was "Scholar"; 22.5% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (6.2%), general labourer (5%), tailor (5%) and other maker / factory worker (3.8%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.8% of all Crookeses, followed by general labourers, agriculture and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Crookes?
The largest religious group among Crookeses was Anglican, at 43.8%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (31.2%), Presbyterian (8.8%), Unitarian (7.5%) and Moravian (6.2%).
