The 1911 Census recorded 519 people named Crossan in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,500 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 289 women to 230 men.

Donegal was Crossan country: 36.6% of them (190 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Derry (114), Antrim (98), Cavan (30) and Down (18).

The average Crossan in 1911 was 30.2 years old, 28.8 for men and 31.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crossan literacy in 1911
Of the Crossans whose literacy was recorded, 66.9% could both read and write, 10% could read but not write, and 23.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 69.6% reading and writing against 64.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (38), James, Patrick, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Catherine, Annie, Bridget and Margaret.
Crossan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Crossan's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (99) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.3%), textile worker (6.7%), general labourer (5.2%) and farm labourer (4.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.9% of all Crossans, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Crossan?
Crossans were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.2%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.1%), Presbyterian (5.8%) and Methodist (1.9%).
