The 1911 Census recorded 2,225 people named Crowe in Ireland, about 0.051% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 393rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,122 men and 1,098 women. (A small number, 5, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Crowe in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Crowes, 16% (355 people). Next came Tipperary (340), Clare (310), Dublin (213) and Limerick (191).
Crowe average age in 1911
The average Crowe in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 29.3 for men and 30.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crowe literacy in 1911
Of the Crowes whose literacy was recorded, 81.8% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 14.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (155), Thomas, James, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (143), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Crowe's census form was "Scholar"; 20.8% (462) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.8%), farm labourer (3.7%), general labourer (3.5%) and textile worker (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.8% of all Crowes, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Crowe?
Most Crowes, 67.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (18.4%), Presbyterian (10%), Methodist (2.5%) and Unitarian (0.2%).
