The 1911 Census recorded 5,552 people named Crowley in Ireland, about 0.127% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 138th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,846 men and 2,700 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)

The Crowleys were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 72.3% of them (4,014 people). Next came Kerry (411), Clare (234), Dublin (172) and Waterford (149).

The average Crowley in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 29.4 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Crowley literacy in 1911
Of the Crowleys whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (454), Patrick, Michael, James and Jeremiah. For women it was Mary (443), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Julia and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Crowley's census form was "Scholar"; 19.8% (1,098) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15%), farm labourer (5.2%), general labourer (4.9%) and domestic servant (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.2% of all Crowleys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Crowleys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.5%).
