The 1911 Census recorded 458 people named Cruise in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 215 men and 242 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin was Cruise country: 40% of them (183 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Roscommon (61), Mayo (30), Galway (25) and Wexford (20).

The average Cruise in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.8 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cruise literacy in 1911
Of the Cruises whose literacy was recorded, 74.7% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 21.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (29), Patrick, Thomas, William and James. For women it was Mary (28), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Annie.
Cruise occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Cruise's census form was "Scholar"; 19.2% (88) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.3%), general labourer (5.9%), farm labourer (2.4%) and domestic servant (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Cruises, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Cruise?
Cruises were predominantly Roman Catholic (86.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (12.4%) and Presbyterian (0.4%).
