The 1911 Census recorded 546 people named Cully in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 261 men and 284 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Down had the largest share of Cullys, 24.4% (133 people). Next came Armagh (95), Antrim (70), Kildare (53) and Westmeath (41).

The average Cully in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 28.1 for men and 30.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cully literacy in 1911
Of the Cullys whose literacy was recorded, 76.9% could both read and write, 5.2% could read but not write, and 17.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79% reading and writing against 74.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Cully common first names
The most common male names were John (41), James, Thomas, Patrick and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (35), followed by Elizabeth, Annie, Margaret and Ellen.
Cully occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Cully's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (109) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.1%), textile worker (6.8%), general labourer (6.4%) and farm labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.7% of all Cullys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Cully?
The largest religious group among Cullys was Roman Catholic, at 42.9%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (31%), Anglican (18.1%), Unitarian (1.6%) and Methodist (1.3%).
