Of the Cummings whose literacy was recorded, 91.9% could both read and write, 0.9% could read but not write, and 7.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 95.9% reading and writing against 88.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.8%), metal worker / engineer (3.1%), tailor (2.7%) and textile worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.1% of all Cummings, followed by textiles & clothing, metal & engineering and retail & commerce.

Most Cummings, 52.2%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.3%), Roman Catholic (7.6%), Methodist (2.2%) and Protestant (1.3%).
