The 1911 Census recorded 537 people named Cunnane in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,200 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 272 men and 265 women.

The Cunnanes were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 52.9% of them (284 people). Next came Sligo (90), Roscommon (87), Galway (65) and Westmeath (7).

The average Cunnane in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.0 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Cunnane literacy in 1911
Of the Cunnanes whose literacy was recorded, 70.2% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 25.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (45), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (44), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Kate and Annie.

The most common occupation among Cunnanes was farmer, 27% of them (145 people). Next came scholar / student (23.3%), farm labourer (3.4%), general labourer (2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 31.1% of all Cunnanes, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
