Of the Cuppleses whose literacy was recorded, 84.4% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 12.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.9% reading and writing against 80.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Cupples's census form was "Scholar"; 26.3% (50) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (7.4%), textile worker (5.3%) and teacher (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Cuppleses, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and professional.
What religion is Cupples?
Cuppleses were predominantly Presbyterian (79.5%). The remainder were mostly Baptist (5.3%), Anglican (4.7%), Plymouth Brethren (3.7%) and Methodist (0.5%).
