The 1911 Census recorded 7,221 people named Curran in Ireland, about 0.165% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 93rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 3,522 men and 3,690 women. (A small number, 9, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Curran in Ireland
Galway had the largest share of Currans, 11.2% (811 people). Next came Donegal (756), Dublin (720), Kerry (696) and Down (623).
Curran average age in 1911
The average Curran in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.3 for men and 29.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Curran literacy in 1911
Of the Currans whose literacy was recorded, 71.7% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 24.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Curran common first names
The most common male names were John (507), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (628), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
Curran occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Curran's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (1,533) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16%), farm labourer (4.5%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.8% of all Currans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Curran?
Currans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.1%), Presbyterian (1.8%), Methodist (0.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.3%).
