That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Men came out slightly ahead, 68% reading and writing against 54.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among Curranes was farmer, 22.8% of them (44 people). Next came scholar / student (11.9%), farm labourer (5.2%), general labourer (5.2%) and domestic servant (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.5% of all Curranes, followed by general labourers, domestic service and fishing.
