Women came out slightly ahead, 88.5% reading and writing against 80.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.7%), domestic servant (4.9%), general labourer (4.9%) and carter / driver / groom (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.6% of all Dahills, followed by domestic service, general labourers and transport.

Dahills were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.9%).
