Of the Danaghers whose literacy was recorded, 78.5% could both read and write, 9.7% could read but not write, and 11.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86% reading and writing against 69.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.2%), domestic servant (7.1%), general labourer (6.1%) and farm labourer (4.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.3% of all Danaghers, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retired & pensioners.
