The average Darker in 1911 was 24.1 years old, 22.1 for men and 25.5 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Darkers whose literacy was recorded, 85.9% could both read and write, 1.4% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 92.9% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (5), George, Charles, William and Christopher. For women it was Alice (3), followed by Annie, Julia, Mary and Adelaide S.
Darker occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Darker's census form was "Scholar"; 30.3% (23) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were other maker / factory worker (5.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.3%), no occupation / dependent (2.6%) and agent / manager (1.3%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 7.9% of all Darkers, followed by manufacturing & trades, domestic service and no occupation / dependent.
What religion is Darker?
The largest religious group among Darkers was Anglican, at 47.4%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (43.4%), Baptist (1.3%), Methodist (1.3%) and Presbyterian (1.3%).
