That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Darragh literacy in 1911
Of the Darraghs whose literacy was recorded, 78.1% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 16.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81% reading and writing against 75.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (54), James, William, Robert and Alexander. For women it was Mary (50), followed by Sarah, Jane, Margaret and Annie.

The most common entry on a Darragh's census form was "Scholar"; 17.5% (123) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.7%), textile worker (6.3%), general labourer (5.7%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.4% of all Darraghs, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Darragh?
The largest religious group among Darraghs was Roman Catholic, at 48.1%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (29.5%), Anglican (13.7%), Methodist (4.6%) and Baptist (2.3%).
