The 1911 Census recorded 282 people named Deacon in Ireland; roughly one in every 16,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 136 men and 145 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Wexford was Deacon country: 41.5% of them (117 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (34), Carlow (29), Dublin (28) and Cork (16).

The average Deacon in 1911 was 28.6 years old, 27.5 for men and 29.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Deacon literacy in 1911
Of the Deacons whose literacy was recorded, 83.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 16.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (14), John, Thomas, Joseph and George. For women it was Annie (10), followed by Elizabeth, Ellen, Mary and Eliza Jane.

The most common entry on a Deacon's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (58) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.6%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%), farm labourer (2.8%) and medical / nursing (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Deacons, followed by professional, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Deacon?
Deacons were predominantly Anglican (79.1%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (16.7%), Presbyterian (2.1%) and Methodist (0.4%).
