The 1911 Census recorded 230 people named Deacy in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 127 women to 102 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Deacys were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 83.9% of them (193 people). Next came Cork (17), Galway (6), Dublin (4) and Westmeath (4).

The average Deacy in 1911 was 27.1 years old, 27.8 for men and 26.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Deacy literacy in 1911
Of the Deacys whose literacy was recorded, 73.3% could both read and write, 0.4% could read but not write, and 26.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75.8% reading and writing against 71.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (21), Patrick, Thomas, Michael and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Bridget, Annie, Maggie and Catherine.
Deacy occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Deacy's census form was "Scholar"; 23.9% (55) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.7%), domestic servant (2.6%), general labourer (2.2%) and clerk / office worker (0.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.5% of all Deacys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
