The 1911 Census recorded 523 people named Deery in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 264 men and 259 women.

Donegal was Deery country: 30.2% of them (158 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Monaghan (119), Tyrone (93), Louth (55) and Derry (46).

The average Deery in 1911 was 31.0 years old, 30.1 for men and 31.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Deery literacy in 1911
Of the Deerys whose literacy was recorded, 71.3% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 23.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (39), John, James, Thomas and Edward. For women it was Mary (39), followed by Ellen, Catherine, Rose and Bridget.
Deery occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Deery's census form was "Scholar"; 20.1% (105) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.9%), general labourer (5.4%), farm labourer (4%) and seamstress (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.1% of all Deerys, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Deery?
Deerys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.4%) and Presbyterian (2.3%).
