Denn literacy in 1911
Of the Denns whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 20.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.4% reading and writing against 71.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Denn common first names
The most common male names were William (5), Edmond, John, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Johanna and Margaret.
Denn occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Denn's census form was "Scholar"; 23.6% (17) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.4%), domestic servant (4.2%), farm labourer (4.2%) and carpenter / joiner (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25% of all Denns, followed by domestic service, building & construction and professional.
What religion is Denn?
Denns were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.4%).
