Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (18), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Bridget, Kate, Maggie and Mary Anne.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16%), farm labourer (5.7%), dressmaker / milliner (2.6%) and gardener (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.2% of all Dennings, followed by textiles & clothing, building & construction and domestic service.

Dennings were predominantly Roman Catholic (73.2%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.3%), Presbyterian (9.3%), Congregationalist (1%) and Plymouth Brethren (1%).
