Women came out slightly ahead, 78.7% reading and writing against 76.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Derby's census form was "Scholar"; 24.2% (38) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.7%), farmer (5.1%), domestic servant (3.8%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 15.9% of all Derbys, followed by agriculture, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Derby?
The largest religious group among Derbys was Roman Catholic, at 48.4%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (36.9%), Presbyterian (7%), Baptist (1.9%) and Methodist (1.9%).
