The 1911 Census recorded 486 people named Devany in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 233 men and 251 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Mayo was Devany country: 35.6% of them (173 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Sligo (85), Galway (63), Roscommon (46) and Longford (33).

The average Devany in 1911 was 27.5 years old, 28.0 for men and 27.1 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Devany literacy in 1911
Of the Devanys whose literacy was recorded, 71.7% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 23.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 75.7% reading and writing against 67.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Devany common first names
The most common male names were Michael (40), Patrick, John, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (50), followed by Bridget, Anne, Margaret and Ellen.
Devany occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Devany's census form was "Scholar"; 24.7% (120) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.3%), general labourer (4.7%), domestic servant (2.3%) and farm labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.3% of all Devanys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
