Devine in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 2,922 people named Devine in Ireland, about 0.067% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 304th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 1,418 men and 1,495 women. (A small number, 9, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Devine in Ireland
Tyrone had the largest share of Devines, 23.6% (691 people). Next came Dublin (366), Derry (340), Mayo (164) and Roscommon (155).
Devine average age in 1911
The average Devine in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 29.8 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Devine literacy in 1911
Of the Devines whose literacy was recorded, 74.7% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 20.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Devine common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (182), John, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (186), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Ellen.
Devine occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Devine's census form was "Scholar"; 19.8% (579) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.5%), farm labourer (3.8%), general labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.3% of all Devines, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Devine?
Devines were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.3%), Presbyterian (1.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.3%).
