The 1911 Census recorded 84 people named Divane in Ireland; roughly one in every 52,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 40 men and 43 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Divanes were heavily concentrated in Kerry, home to 83.3% of them (70 people). Next came Cork (12), Dublin (1) and Limerick (1).

The average Divane in 1911 was 30.3 years old, 27.0 for men and 33.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Divane literacy in 1911
Of the Divanes whose literacy was recorded, 76.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 23.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.5% reading and writing against 73.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Divane common first names
The most common male names were Denis (6), John, Timothy, Daniel and James. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Julia, Catherine, Johanna and Kate.
Divane occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Divane's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.5%), domestic servant (3.6%), farm labourer (3.6%) and general labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.2% of all Divanes, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retired & pensioners.
What religion is Divane?
Divanes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.2%).
