Dobbin literacy in 1911
Of the Dobbins whose literacy was recorded, 79.4% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.6% reading and writing against 78.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (35), John, William, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Sarah, Annie, Jane and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Dobbin's census form was "Scholar"; 21.6% (139) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.2%), textile worker (5.6%), farm labourer (5.4%) and general labourer (4.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.6% of all Dobbins, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Dobbin?
The largest religious group among Dobbins was Presbyterian, at 35.7%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (35.2%), Anglican (22.2%), Unitarian (1.9%) and Methodist (1.4%).
