Of the Doggetts whose literacy was recorded, 90.6% could both read and write, 1.2% could read but not write, and 8.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.7% reading and writing against 89.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Thomas (9), Patrick, James, John and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Kate, Annie, Elizabeth and Anne.

The most common occupation among Doggetts was farm labourer, 16.3% of them (14 people). Next came scholar / student (14%), farmer (9.3%), herd / dairy worker (9.3%) and domestic servant (4.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 34.9% of all Doggetts, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
