The 1911 Census recorded 5,638 people named Dolan in Ireland, about 0.129% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 135th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,906 men and 2,726 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Dolan in Ireland
Cavan had the largest share of Dolans, 18.4% (1,039 people). Next came Leitrim (780), Roscommon (618), Dublin (481) and Galway (475).

The average Dolan in 1911 was 30.6 years old, 30.8 for men and 30.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Dolan literacy in 1911
Of the Dolans whose literacy was recorded, 77% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 18.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (431), John, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (416), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Anne.

The most common occupation among Dolans was farmer, 22.6% of them (1,275 people). Next came scholar / student (20.2%), farm labourer (3.6%), general labourer (2.8%) and domestic servant (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.8% of all Dolans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Dolans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.6%), Methodist (0.1%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
