Doody in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 789 people named Doody in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 398 men and 390 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Limerick was Doody country: 28% of them (221 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Kerry (185), Cork (93), Dublin (65) and Kilkenny (63).
Doody average age in 1911
The average Doody in 1911 was 30.5 years old, 30.0 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Doody literacy in 1911
Of the Doodys whose literacy was recorded, 79% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 18% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Doody common first names
The most common male names were John (59), Patrick, Michael, James and William. For women it was Mary (78), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Margaret and Kate.
Doody occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Doody's census form was "Scholar"; 21.3% (168) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.6%), farm labourer (7.6%), general labourer (6.6%) and domestic servant (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.9% of all Doodys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Doody?
Doodys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.6%) and Anglican (0.1%).
