The 1911 Census recorded 882 people named Doolan in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 451 men and 431 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Doolans, 16.6% (146 people). Next came Offaly (108), Tipperary (84), Cork (78) and Kilkenny (73).

The average Doolan in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 29.6 for men and 29.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Doolan literacy in 1911
Of the Doolans whose literacy was recorded, 75.3% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 21.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (62), James, Michael, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (75), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Kate.
Doolan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Doolan's census form was "Scholar"; 21% (185) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.4%), general labourer (8.4%), farm labourer (5.7%) and domestic servant (4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.8% of all Doolans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Doolan?
Doolans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.6%).
