The average Douds in 1911 was 24.6 years old, 28.7 for men and 21.4 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Douds literacy in 1911
Of the Doudses whose literacy was recorded, 76.5% could both read and write, 5.9% could read but not write, and 17.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 74.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (4), Samuel, Robert, James and Patrick. For women it was Bridget (4), followed by Martha, Esther, Ellen and Jane.
Douds occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Douds's census form was "Scholar"; 31.5% (23) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.7%), textile worker (8.2%), general labourer (4.1%) and fisherman (1.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.7% of all Doudses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is Douds?
The largest religious group among Doudses was Presbyterian, at 49.3%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (28.8%), Methodist (12.3%) and Moravian (9.6%).
