Of the Dowdalls whose literacy was recorded, 82.1% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.9% reading and writing against 80.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.8%), general labourer (5.2%), farm labourer (3.9%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.5% of all Dowdalls, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

Dowdalls were predominantly Roman Catholic (89.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.5%), Methodist (0.9%) and Presbyterian (0.9%).
