Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (13%), metal worker / engineer (5.1%), general labourer (3.1%) and carpenter / joiner (2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 16.6% of all Dowdses, followed by metal & engineering, domestic service and agriculture.
What religion is Dowds?
The largest religious group among Dowdses was Roman Catholic, at 45.9%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.1%), Presbyterian (17.5%), Congregationalist (5.6%) and Methodist (1.4%).
