That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.4% reading and writing against 73.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (14.3%), other maker / factory worker (7.1%), farm labourer (2.9%) and farmer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 18.6% of all Duboises, followed by manufacturing & trades, agriculture and building & construction.
What religion is Dubois?
Most Duboises, 52.9%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (30%), Non-Conformist (12.9%) and Congregationalist (4.3%).
