That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Duhig literacy in 1911
Of the Duhigs whose literacy was recorded, 83.5% could both read and write, 2.4% could read but not write, and 14% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 93.2% reading and writing against 75.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Michael, James, Patrick and Daniel. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Ellen, Bridget, Margaret and Annie; matching the national top five exactly.
Duhig occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Duhig's census form was "Scholar"; 24% (40) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (10.2%), farmer (4.8%), domestic servant (3.6%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 10.2% of all Duhigs, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
