The 1911 Census recorded 1,483 people named Dunn in Ireland, about 0.034% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 581st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 717 men and 762 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Dunns, 19.6% (290 people). Next came Down (261), Dublin (221), Tyrone (156) and Derry (128).

The average Dunn in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 28.3 for men and 31.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (82), James, William, Thomas and Robert. For women it was Mary (85), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Annie and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Dunn's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (300) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.3%), general labourer (4.2%), domestic servant (3.8%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.6% of all Dunns, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.

What religion is Dunn?

The largest religious group among Dunns was Roman Catholic, at 36%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (30.3%), Anglican (24.5%), Methodist (3.2%) and Non-Conformist (1.6%).
