The 1911 Census recorded 487 people named Durkin in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 253 men and 234 women.

Mayo was Durkin country: 32.4% of them (158 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Sligo (120), Leitrim (57), Roscommon (57) and Dublin (44).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Durkin literacy in 1911
Of the Durkins whose literacy was recorded, 77% could both read and write, 1.1% could read but not write, and 21.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79% reading and writing against 74.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (42), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (40), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Kate and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Durkin's census form was "Scholar"; 23.2% (113) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.6%), general labourer (4.3%), farm labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.7% of all Durkins, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
