The 1911 Census recorded 300 people named Durnin in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 156 men and 144 women.

The Durnins were heavily concentrated in Louth, home to 59.7% of them (179 people). Next came Dublin (45), Donegal (20), Derry (16) and Meath (11).

The average Durnin in 1911 was 29.6 years old, 27.4 for men and 32.0 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Durnin literacy in 1911
Of the Durnins whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 15.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 76.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (23), John, Thomas, James and Edward. For women it was Mary (23), followed by Bridget, Alice, Julia and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Durnin's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (59) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.7%), farm labourer (6.3%), general labourer (6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Durnins, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Durnin?
Durnins were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.7%).
