The 1911 Census recorded 547 people named Dyer in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 263 men and 283 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Sligo was Dyer country: 27.1% of them (148 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Roscommon (96), Antrim (78), Mayo (57) and Dublin (51).

The average Dyer in 1911 was 30.9 years old, 30.2 for men and 31.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Dyer literacy in 1911
Of the Dyers whose literacy was recorded, 77.7% could both read and write, 5% could read but not write, and 17.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.2% reading and writing against 76.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Dyer common first names
The most common male names were Patrick (33), John, Thomas, James and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Elizabeth and Ellen.
Dyer occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Dyer's census form was "Scholar"; 19.4% (106) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.6%), farm labourer (3.5%), general labourer (3.1%) and domestic servant (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.2% of all Dyers, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Dyer?
Most Dyers, 68.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (19.7%), Presbyterian (5.3%), Congregationalist (1.6%) and Methodist (1.3%).
