The 1911 Census recorded 1,008 people named Early in Ireland, about 0.023% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 781st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 528 men and 480 women.

Leitrim had the largest share of Earlys, 23.7% (239 people). Next came Tyrone (127), Dublin (117), Mayo (96) and Roscommon (84).

The average Early in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 29.4 for men and 32.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Early literacy in 1911
Of the Earlys whose literacy was recorded, 73.7% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 21% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Early common first names
The most common male names were John (89), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (74), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Anne.
Early occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Earlys was farmer, 24.4% of them (246 people). Next came scholar / student (20.4%), general labourer (5.2%), farm labourer (4.6%) and domestic servant (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 29.4% of all Earlys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Early?
Earlys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Salvation Army (0.9%), Anglican (0.8%), Presbyterian (0.5%) and Methodist (0.1%).
