Of the Edgeworths whose literacy was recorded, 77.9% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 19.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.3% reading and writing against 74.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.7%), general labourer (3.7%), other professional (3%) and clerk / office worker (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.9% of all Edgeworths, followed by general labourers, domestic service and professional.

Edgeworths were predominantly Roman Catholic (81.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.9%).
