Egan in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 7,038 people named Egan in Ireland, about 0.161% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 99th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 3,526 men and 3,498 women. (A small number, 14, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Egan in Ireland
Offaly had the largest share of Egans, 12.3% (864 people). Next came Roscommon (795), Galway (731), Dublin (684) and Tipperary (600).
Egan average age in 1911
The average Egan in 1911 was 30.5 years old, 30.3 for men and 30.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Egan literacy in 1911
Of the Egans whose literacy was recorded, 78.3% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 17.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Egan common first names
The most common male names were John (527), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (588), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine.
Egan occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Egans was farmer, 20.7% of them (1,459 people). Next came scholar / student (20.6%), farm labourer (4.2%), general labourer (3.6%) and domestic servant (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25.4% of all Egans, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Egan?
Egans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.1%), Congregationalist (0.1%), Methodist (0.1%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
