Elder in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 503 people named Elder in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 247 men and 255 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Elder in Ireland
The Elders were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 50.3% of them (253 people). Next came Derry (130), Donegal (30), Dublin (23) and Down (22).

Elder average age in 1911
The average Elder in 1911 was 29.7 years old, 31.1 for men and 28.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Elder literacy in 1911
Of the Elders whose literacy was recorded, 81.9% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 13.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Elder common first names
The most common male names were John (27), William, James, Robert and Samuel. For women it was Mary (25), followed by Sarah, Elizabeth, Maggie and Margaret.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.5%), farm labourer (5.6%), general labourer (4.6%) and textile worker (4.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Elders, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
