That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Ellisons whose literacy was recorded, 80.7% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 14.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.4% of all Ellisons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.

The largest religious group among Ellisons was Presbyterian, at 47.7%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.2%), Roman Catholic (11.6%), Methodist (3.8%) and Protestant (1.3%).
