That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Englishby literacy in 1911
Of the Englishbys whose literacy was recorded, 82.5% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 12.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.9% reading and writing against 75% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), Thomas, Patrick, James and Joseph. For women it was Bridget (4), followed by Annie, Catherine, Elizabeth and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Englishbys was farm labourer, 23.3% of them (14 people). Next came scholar / student (21.7%), general labourer (11.7%), farmer (10%) and blacksmith / smith (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 36.7% of all Englishbys, followed by general labourers, metal & engineering and domestic service.
